The issue of student desertion is of mandatory analysis and reflection by academic programs and educational institutions, seeking to clearly know, beyond the figures, the variables involved in the phenomenon. Despite the fact that -in its 20 years of existence- within The Social Communication Program of The Universidad del Cauca (Colombia) there is not a high proportion of student desertion; this study identifies the higher recurrence of the consideration for droping out of the career by students on different semesters. It was also verified that: 1. If such diverse considerations are specified, the most common types of desertion would be early, definitive, and internal, and 2. The seven most important aspects identified as causes of such consideration correspond to variables of different origin, whose assigned order of importance is: academic, socioeconomic, institutional and individual
